Weekly Photo Challenge: Nostalgic

Weekly Photo Challenge: Nostalgic

Again it is the weekly photo challenge and the theme this week is nostalgic.  The above picture was taken back in 2011 at Paignton Beach in Devon.. Why it is nostalgic to me is simply because it reminds me of a holiday I spent in Devon with my mum and my young son back in 1989 (correction it was 1989 and not 1988)… We strolled along the pier and from that boat getty we caught the small boat that took us on our daily boat trips.  We travelled to Torquay, Brixham and Dartmouth and one night we set sail to see the lights around the coastline..   Now I don’t like the water and every trip taken was with reluctance  but my young son thought it was such an adventure.. So after a lot of deep breaths and a fake smile and a prayer when the trip was over… I did the dutiful parent thing and went on these trips.

I am an amateur photographer, blogger and digital artist as well as being the female half of RyanPhotography. We both have a keen interest in landscape and floral photography. And we live in Kent, also known as the Garden of England, in the United Kingdom. We both have a desire to travel and hopefully one day move to somewhere where it is picturesque and a photographer's delight.

Great photo! Fear of water aside… it sounds like a wonderful memory of a lovely holiday and your son obviously had a great time! 🙂

It was a lovely holiday.. we lost my dad the previous year and it did my mum good to get away for a week… She loved the early mornings and my son was up at the crack of dawn (an eager 5 year old) waiting for nan to get ready to go down onto Paignton seafront to play football.

Sorry to hear about your dad, I’m sure it did your mum the world of good to share a holiday with you and her grandson. My sons, now 17 and 15 don’t remember what dawn looks like!!! 😉

Oh yes, I found that .. as they get older the mornings seem to be taken up with laying in bed.. 😉 Mine is now 29 with a family of his own.. and I think he has finally realised what parents go through 😀

Heh heh I’m still waiting for that! It really is only when you become a parent yourself that you begin to appreciate your own parents! 🙂

Very true… I could never understand why my parents worried so much.. I knew I was OK and thought they would think that automatically… but it is only when you have kids of your own and they grow up that you really understand the worry.

No matter how old he was.. I could never sleep soundly until I heard that key go in the door.. Once I knew he was home OK I could sleep..

Oh I’m the same! I have a daughter who’s 23 and while she was away at uni and I didn’t know where she was at night and what she was doing I didn’t worry but as soon as she was home during the holidays and she was going out I would have to know she was home safe before I could sleep!
When you’re young you think you’re safe and can take on the world! It’s only when you get older that you realise the dangers but (as my grandmother use to say) you can’t put an old head on young shoulders! 🙂

I have heard my mother say that..about putting old head on young shoulders.. and it is very true. Men don’t seem to worry about it so much.. I have to admit, he was a good kid when at home.. he did tell me if he was coming home or staying at a mates… and he would text me if there was a change of plans. But it still doesn’t stop you worrying.

I think it’s our ‘lot’ as mother’s… we’ll never stop worrying we’ll just do it less when they move out because if we don’t know what they’re doing we can’t worry about it… ignorance is bliss! 😀

Yep.. there is that to it.. what the eye don’t see the heart don’t grieve… 😀

Thank you for adding me to the list of posts you have included with your own lovely post!
Beautiful photograph – I especially like the sky. I’m glad you did “the dutiful parent thing” 🙂
Thank you for sharing!

Oh yes I did the dutiful thing.. I really thought the first time would be enough.. but he loved the boat rides.. so there was my mother and I sitting there on the seats closest to the life jackets and rings.. smiling away.. hoping this trip would be the last and he would get bored of going out on the water.. 😀

Doing something ‘fun’ that you hate for the sake of your child is really noble parenting!
You’ll have to explain that to him some day when he’s much, much older…!

Yes I have told him.. and jokingly told him when his kids get old enough I am going to get them to ask their father to take them up in our local castle … he doesn’t like heights.. so I will get my own back 😀

Sounds fair to me!

The only thing is he has told me if I do that.. he will tell them that nanny loves to go for boat rides.. You can’t win with these kids nowadays can you? 😀

Tricky! You never learnt to love boat rides, then?

Unfortunately, I am a two stroke, three bubbles and a funeral type of swimmer.. and the fear of water and not being able to swim scares me rigid. A couple of years ago we (hubby and me – and he loves the water) went on Boat Trip from Dartmouth to Torquay and the swell as we left Dartmouth was rough… I was so thankful when we finally reached Torquay and I could get my feet back onto firm ground.

I just love comments... Thanks for stopping by...
