The beach at Monterey

The beach at Monterey

A photograph of the beach at Monterey California.

Our final stop on our grand tour of the West Coast of the United States, ended with a 3 day stop at Monterey… our hotel was right there on the beach… and we had wonderful views of the coastline and Monterey….  during our second day there… the Pacific Ocean came crashing into the shoreline as the winds increased..

The following two photographs were taken on our very first night there as the sun was setting over Monterey

Folkestone Beach – On the Rocks

Folkestone Beach – On the Rocks

Just as the weather started to turn, he managed to get this shot of the rocks on the beach at Folkestone.  This shot was taken just up from the cable car entrance  at the Lower Leas in Folkestone.  At the Lower Leas end of the beach is scenic gardens overlooking the seashore, which I would love to revisit at some point and take some night shots, from there as it seems very illuminated.

Solitude

Solitude

That was it… I didn’t care how much my hips and knees were killing me…. I knew I had to get out… these four walls were driving me insane and I needed some fresh air.  The wind was blowing and so we decided to go to St. Leonard’s near Hasting to catch some waves.

Anyway I was in charge of Tom-Tom and I thought I had put the directions in properly but alas no… we were heading back towards Dungeness… oh boy that god that man had a sense of humour… we were heading nowhere near St. Leonards.

So after realising my mistake we came across Camber Sands in East Sussex… and luckily the car park was right by the beach so no walking for me…  It was brazing and cold and we couldn’t believe the number of dog walkers and dogs.. but I did manage to capture this photograph of the sun shining on the sea… and this one person standing by the seashore…

After a coffee we headed towards St. Leonards… where we originally intended to go.

Hut on Beach…

The above picture was created by merging three different exposures to create a high dynamic range image.  This photograph was solely processed in Lightroom.  Lately I have been using a lot of Split Toning in our photographs… I am getting the feel for this split toning now and I do like the effects it has on the colours of your images.  However with the shades I used for this picture, they sky didn’t seem right.  But that was easily corrected by adding a graduated filter and playing with the tint and temperature sliders in Lightroom.

This shot was taken at Dungeness in Kent and was taken using a tripod… The only thing was as it was a tripod shot I turned off my image stabilisation… and forgot to turn it back on when I started to take hand-held shots.. Note to self – check your bloody camera settings before hitting the fire button.  Mind you I eventually did realise my mistake but it was rather annoying as I had taken quite a few shots before realising and I just didn’t have the stamina in me to retrace my steps and take those shots again. Anyway I will remember next time… they say you learn by your mistakes.  And boy have I learnt!!!! 😀 😀 😀 😀

Sun setting on Monterey

Sun setting on Monterey

The last few days of our holiday in the USA was spent at Monterey…. our hotel was literally on the beach and you could hear the waves crashing into the shore.  On this particular day the sea had been quite rough and it by dusk it started to calm down a little, when hubby took this photo.  What I love about it is how the vibrant sunset shone on the sand and the waves as they cascaded to the shoreline.

Return to Joss Bay

Return to Joss Bay

Saturday night we decided to return to Joss Bay… again we tried to park close to Kingsgate but had no luck… Anyway as we drove back from Joss Bay, where we wanted to take photographs from was inaccessible due to the high tide.

We pulled into the car park, and the surfers were just packing up for the day… and the sun was setting over the countryside instead of at sea… which was a shame… but nothing was going to stop us from taking a few shots.

The beach was bare… all that could be seen was the foot prints of the surfers as they left the beach… there was not a soul on the beach… which was lovely.  We do have some wonderful coastline in the South East… just a shame we can’t get to park near it.  And this old hip of mine won’t do a marathon or even a small hike…

Just as we were leaving the beach started to fill with dog walkers.. and dogs were having fun running in and out of the sea, catching their balls or the stones that were thrown for them.

We did venture back into Herne Bay and as we drove there, we were planning on walking onto the pier and taking shots of the lights of Herne Bay… but again we were disappointed there was one light on near the beach… and nothing else… plus the fact that the mist had started to roll in… so all shots would have been behind a haze.  So no luck there…. mind you we did have a bag of chips and they were lovely.

The only thing left to do was go home…. and then as we drove along the M2 … where we definitely couldn’t stop… was the perfect shot… the after glow of the sunset across the field and the mist rising from the field… a photographers delight of a shot… but right next to the bloody hard shoulder… so a definite no-no.

Not a good night for taking photographers.. but it was nice to walk on a beach that didn’t have a soul on it…. it felt as if it was our own private beach for just a few minutes.

Another picture taken Saturday night at Southen-on-Sea… I just love how the sky looks as if it is on fire…  It was one of those evenings where the sky seemed to just perfect and welcoming… It was just a shame it was bloody cold there.

Sunset at Southend…

Sunset at Southend…

Well with mum still being in hospital and time very limited for taking photographs, again we practised our night time photography.  I have seen many photographs of glorious sunsets and have spent many a dream wishing I was there on that beach, watching that particular sunset.

Well let me assure you…. Southend at night at the beginning of September 2015, was busy… packed and bloody freezing. 😀 😀

Anyway, the better half of RyanPhotography… took two shots at different exposure times… and today I thought I would try something new… instead of merging them into an HDR image… I would do some adjustments in Lightroom and then blend the layers in Photoshop.  Again in Photoshop I played around with the camera raw settings and curves and then imported my photograph back into Lightroom, where I did some minor tweaks.

See even Southend has nice sunsets at times…. 😀
