Night Photography

The Eiffel at Las Vegas..

The Eiffel at Las Vegas..

A photograph of the Eiffel Tower Replica on the Strip at Las Vegas.

I have been playing around with this photo for a while… but the night that was taken the sky was dark and overcast and there wasn’t a star in sight… so with the powers of Photoshop I recreated a moon and clouds.. by adding an overlay and masking out the parts where I didn’t want the clouds to appear.

Fire in the Sky

Fire in the Sky

A photograph of Canary Wharf just as the sun was setting and before the buildings started to become illuminated.

When we first started to do night photography, one of the very first places we visited was North Greenwich and we chose a location just by the river overlooking Canary Wharf.  Hubby had worked in North Greenwich and could see the buildings as they gradually become illuminated as day turned into night.  This shot was just as the sun was setting and the lights started to shine in the buildings…

Maidstone

Maidstone

Here is another photograph taken at Maidstone on Saturday night…luckily we were able to park within easy distance of the river… so not much walking for me… lately my hands are finding it very hard to hold a camera steady.. so I am using either a monopod or tripod… however this isn’t at all bad simply because I can now take some long exposure photographs, with thanks to a shutter release cable.

The above photo was  composed by using  6 shots taken at different exposures and then merged using Photomatix … the main editing was done in Lightroom, however to add warmth to the photograph I did use the photo filter in Photoshop.

The above photograph was taken as the sun was fading in the background and the street lights started to glow.  Those light that are under the bridge change colour.

Tonight we had a little drive to Maidstone in Kent and took these photographs of the wonderful architectural buildings that line the River Medway.

It was nice to get out for a little while and it was very tranquil just by the river there, sitting on a bench and letting the camera do all the hard work.

Meridian Laser

Meridian Laser

Back in August we went to Canary Wharf to capture the lights of buildings there… as we looked along the river towards Greenwich towards the Cutty Sark, as the night sky darkened, the Meridian Laser shone bright in the sky.  To be honest I am quite impressed with the photograph as it was taken with just a kit lens that was supplied with our first camera.

The winter months are now here and I am longing to go back to London to photograph Tower Bridge, Westminster and the London Eye at night.

The Mirage

The Mirage

When we stayed in Las Vegas back in May 2015, we hadn’t really go into night photography.  And believe me, we could have kicked ourselves… because there was so many spectacular lights and hotel fronts full of dazzling lights then were just waiting to be captured.  The above picture was taken as we stood by The Mirage hotel, waiting to see their volcanic water display.

Caesar’s Palace – Las Vegas

Caesar’s Palace – Las Vegas

During our holiday to the USA back in May 2015… we spent three nights/two full days in Las Vegas.  Gambling is not for me but whilst there we did manage to do a helicopter ride over the Grand Canyon and see ‘The Million Dollar Quartet‘ Show… which I highly recommend if you like Gerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, Johnny Cash and of course Elvis.

Outside of every hotel in Vegas is a theme… and the Venetian is absolutely beautiful.. and of course so is Caesar’s Palace. Trying to get photographs of Las Vegas without people in it.. is nigh on impossible.

Whilst travelling we didn’t take our tripods… well we hadn’t got into night photography by then… and boy do I wish we had… and had taken our tripods with us… there was some beautiful shots to capture… but you really did need a tripod.

Anyway this photograph was captured hand-held.. with a long shutter speed… and is really one one of a few that are in focus.  Next trip abroad… pack tripod… forget about the fancy shoes… and colossal amount of handbags… get the tripod in first…. lesson learnt.

As beautiful as Las Vegas is… it is not the place for me… I am not a gambler.. and I couldn’t stand walking along The Strip and people forever shoving leaflets or cards for me to go and waste my money in their casino… or rent a boy, hire a girl or whatever suited your fancy.

I did capture the volcano eruption at the Mirage…

And the water feature at the Bellagio

The Pier

The Pier

For a cold evening… I have never known a seafront to be so busy… we just couldn’t believe our eyes at the amount of people that were at Southend when we visited on the first Saturday in September.  It was packed… and we so wanted to take photographs of the pier.  But by all accounts you can’t walk along it after a certain time of night.

Which for a photographer is a bloody nuisance to be honest… people they get into your photographs (I know I shouldn’t complain) but the amount of people that could see we had a tripod set up and was taking a photo and didn’t even attempt to not walk into the frame.  Anyway I know they have as much right to be there as we do.. but seriously a little consideration goes a long way.

Anyway as I froze on the beach I changed lenses to my 55-250mm Canon lens and took this of the pier with its amusement arcade in full illumination. I can remember as a child taking the little train along Southend-on-Sea Pier and then walking back.. it was such a long walk… believe me.  And very breezy at times. 😀 😀

After shivering we decided to walk back to the car… and as we walked along the seafront we noticed a fountain feature set in the pavement….  It took quite a few shots before I managed to capture the fountain without someone running through. 😀 😀  But I managed it in the end… not a spectacular shot.. but I just loved how the lights set within the water jets changed colour.

The fountain changed colour, and the height of the water sprays varied and the kids just couldn’t help themselves but run through the water.  Anyway I did manage to get the shot in the end…

Another picture taken Saturday night at Southen-on-Sea… I just love how the sky looks as if it is on fire…  It was one of those evenings where the sky seemed to just perfect and welcoming… It was just a shame it was bloody cold there.
