Ashenbank Woods – Bluebell Glade

Ashenbank Woods – Bluebell Glade

A photograph of bluebells at Ashenbank Woods near Cobham in Kent.

You don’t have to travel far from where we live in springtime to get these wonderful shots of bluebells as they cover the woodland.  Close to us is Ashenbank Woods near Cobham in Kent.. and in springtime there are masses and masses of bluebells.

Spring in Ashenbank Woods

Spring in Ashenbank Woods

ashenbank-woods-img-4407-framed

Here in the South East of England it is freezing; there is a thick frost on the ground and a definite chill in the air.  Winter is coming.. the sun might be shining on this cold, frosty morning, but I long for spring to arrive.

The above photograph was taken back in Spring 2016 at Ashenbank Woods near Cobham in Kent…  The deer and the rabbits… are Photoshop Extras but you can still see how thick those bluebells were as they covered the woodland.

Medieval Fantasy Forest

Medieval Fantasy Forest

Medieval Fantasy Forest

For this piece of artwork I wanted to create something that was sort of medieval set in woodland.  To create this image, I created my background texture by using various textures blended together… I found this wonderful medieval woman sitting on a stone wall from Clip Art Graphics and thought she would look brilliant in a woodland…

I added a lantern to give some light to the image… and of course I had to add a fairy and fairy dust… just to give it that magical feel.  I then processed the image further in Topaz Texture Effects 2, and Nik Color Efex 4.

Halo

Halo

halo-img006-2

Where I am not able to get out and about much with this dreaded hip… (can’t wait for the op now, boredom and frustration are setting in)… photography has had to take a bit of a back burner…  And as silly as it sounds… going through old photos of places of where we have been… makes me feel even more down that I can’t get out and about.

So to combat this, I have taken to doing Digital Art in Photoshop, I am still much a novice… but believe me… it is teaching me a whole lot more about Photoshop… clipping masks, layer masks, adjustment layers, filters.

What I am loving is once I have created my artwork.. I can then go one step further in Lightroom as well as other software programmes I use, like Topaz Adjust, Texture Effects and Nik Software.

Here are a few of the other processing techniques I have used on this image.

Photoshop Mix for Tablet

Photoshop Mix for Tablet

Ashenbank woods.jpg processed in Lightroom Mobile and Photoshop Mix

Finally it is here.. Photoshop Mix for Android Tablet.. for many weeks and months I have been moaning that Photoshop Mix was only available for your phone.. now it’s available for tablet use and I have created the image above using Lightroom Mobile and Photoshop Mix.  Now let’s hope that Adobe adds all features of Lightroom Mobile which are available to iPad and iPhone users, to their android app.

Here’s hoping 😀

Rework of Nymans…

Rework of Nymans…

A photograph of the stone wall and wooden gate at Nymans that leads you into the walled gardens.

If you are ever in West Sussex and looking for a place to visit.. then I can highly recommend Nymans.. we have visited this place, which is owned and maintained by the National Trust, many times.  It is wheelchair friendly.. even though I haven’t been there recently but the paths are wide and easily accessible for a wheelchair.

The above photograph was taken of the wooden gate that leads you into the walled court-yard garden.

Another favourite photograph of mine is this gazebo… and how it surrounded by the vibrant colours of various hydrangeas.

The grounds are immaculate, with its croquet lawn, formal gardens and woodland walks..  Nymans suffered severe damage in the 1987 storm.. but it is recovering now and you would hardly believe that it had been so badly affected by the storm.

The gardens are outstanding.. and there are many rhododendrons, hydrangea and azalea bushes throughout the grounds..

There are informal and formal gardens.. with eye-catching flowers just waiting to be photographed.

We visited Nymans, on a cloudy day back in July 2012 and whilst we were there the heavens opened .. and we hide in that gazebo.. the shower didn’t last long but it gave us the great opportunity of photographing this flower which still had the raindrops on its petals.

Another photograph I like is this yellow flower..

I will be thankful when I get this new hip of mine… counting down the weeks now.. and hoping I get a phone call very soon as I do miss my photography jaunts… even though I have a wheelchair it still isn’t the same… when we go out photographing the wonderful landscapes around us.

Mind you, being laid up like this is giving me the chance to rework some of our very old photographs.. which I thoroughly enjoy doing. Sometimes when I go to edit the photographs that we first took and processing … I cringe at the way I processed that particular photograph.

But even with all the cringing  I can see how far I have come in post-processing.. and how much I have learnt about post-processing.. especially the art of dodging and burning and mastering Lightroom.  Especially when you have a dull, bland sky in a photograph, you can easily rectify this by using textures, instead of having to trash the photograph because the sky just wasn’t right.

A photograph taken at Loch Leven in Scotland

A photograph taken at Loch Leven in Scotland

During our holiday in Scotland… on the very first day of arriving we drove around Loch Leven… heading towards Kinlochleven… this photograph was taken at Kinlochleven and is a photograph of the wooded area that surrounds the River Leven.  For my landscape photographs, especially of wooded areas, I am finding Topaz Texture Effects 2.. gives the trees a lovely texture to them…. and I used a Preset I created called ‘Autumn Tones’ to enhance this photograph.

A bridge too far

With each day that passes my journey with Topaz Texture Effects 2 is getting better and better.. I am learning how to create my own Presets and learning what each slider does.  I can’t express enough the power of the Luminosity Masking in TTE2, for me it makes processing a textured photograph so much easier.

I would also like to mention there is an excellent community on Topaz Texture Effects 2, where other users upload effects that they have created, which you can download.  And if you wish you can even share your own effects with the community.  Talk about a bonus… I would say so.

The above photograph was one of the very first photographs we took back in 2013 at Sheffield Park Gardens and was photographed using a point and shoot camera.

A walk in the woods

A walk in the woods

Ashenbank Woods IMG_4422 - Framed

Well it is nearly the weekend… and I am sitting here with two scared pooches because we have a raging storm overhead of us… and I thought I would just do a photograph which showed sunshine… yes that big yellow thing in the sky that we saw for about 2 days before it decided to give up the ghost.

Originally I was going to do this photograph in Black and White but after adding a texture to it in Photoshop, and a coloured graduated filter… plus many little radial filters to enhance the light… I thought I would keep it in colour.

Have a great weekend people and I hope the weather is good to you all…

Trees come to life…

Trees come to life…

Taken by Bren Ryan

Taken by Bren Ryan

The photograph of the above trees and the way their small wispy branches protrude from the trunks reminds me of the scene from Lord of the Rings – Two Towers, where the trees come to life.

I could just envisage those trees coming to life in the still of the night and moving around the wooded area of Doddington Place, near Sittingbourne, in Kent
