One Photo Focus – October

As many of you know, Stacy Fischer of Visual Venturing Blog runs a monthly one photo focus.  The idea is that, a photo is submitted for that month’s challenge by another photographer and we do our edits to it.

I loved the photo submitted by Michelle Lunato for the October challenge …. and I didn’t want to alter the picture dramatically…

Firstly, I did my usual edits in Lightroom, added some clarity, brought up the shadows and decreased the highlights.. Did some dodging and burning using the adjustment brush and enhanced the details.  I then exported it to Photoshop.

Once in Photoshop I then added a few clouds, by using a cloud overlay, blended the layers together and then I did a curve layer adjustment and then reimported the photo back into Lightroom for some minor edits.. Like adding a radial filter to enhance the sun flare… and its reflection on the water. I wanted to enhance the sun’s reflection on the water… as I think this is the key to the whole photograph and the sunfare really makes the photograph seem to pop.

Here is the final image

But I do have to say… it feels real funny altering someone else’s photograph… I love doing the challenge but have this sheer dread that I am not doing someone’s photograph the justice it deserves.  Mind you on saying that… altering another person’s photograph… see how they shot the photograph and what setting’s they used.. does give you inspiration to try something new.  What I loved about the photograph is the angle it was shot it… it seems to give you the impression that the photograph was at water level… In order to capture the perspective of the boats.

I think it is a brilliant shot.. and I do hope I have given this photograph the justice it deserves.  And once again thank you to Stacy Fischer for hosting these ‘One Photo Focus’ monthly photo challenges.

  1. Bren, I love the late afternoon feel you enhanced in the photo, and the addition of the clouds was a wonderful idea! I know what you mean about feeling a responsibility when editing someone else’s photo, but I also find I try things I wouldn’t necessarily use on my own images. I don’t know why that is, but I sure have fun with it 🙂 Thanks so much for sharing your vision of Michelle’s photo!
